Babcock 10K Series to Host Scottish Championship Race in 2023

The Babcock 10K Series has been selected by Scottish Athletics to host the Scottish 10K Championships for the first time. The event will be part of the Babcock Shettleston 10K, organised by Shettleston Harriers at Glasgow Green on Sunday 14^th May at 10.00am.

As well as the men’s and women’s championship races, there will also be a wheelchair championship for both men and women. Scottish Athletics’ championship medals will be contested, in addition to more than £6,000 in cash and Start Fitness vouchers for running equipment.

Babcock Series Chairman, Kevin Johnson, expressed his delight at having finally secured the prestigious championships after several years of trying: “The Scottish Championships will undoubtedly strengthen the front end of the race and ensure greater strength and depth in both the men’s and women’s races. We are also delighted to include wheelchair athletes at Shettleston for the first time.”

Shettleston Race Director, John Mackay, who is responsible for securing the championships, believes that Weynay Ghebresilasie’s Series’ record of 29 mins 32 seconds, and Fionnuala Ross’s women’s record of 34 minutes and 8 seconds, may well be under threat.

Entries are now open at babcock10kseries.co.uk or by going directly to runabc.co.uk. The Series welcomes Olympians, serious club runners, recreational runners and those seeking a new challenge who are completing the 10K distance for the first time.

Every finisher in each race will receive a unique commemorative medal and a goody bag containing a different item of running merchandise at each event. There are prizes for leading individuals, teams and age groups.

All of the races are largely traffic-free courses. Helensburgh benefits from complete road closures, whilst the Shettleston race is at Glasgow Green and Dumbarton largely on cycle paths.

Male athletes with a personal best inside 31 minutes and female athletes faster than 36 minutes will receive a free entry for the Babcock Shettleston 10K and should email kevin.johnson@marvelus.co.uk for details.
